Elizabeth stands in the doorway, watching people traipse equipment back and forth. The Daedalus is almost ready for their long trip back to the Pegasus galaxy, the last few people and supplies arriving at the Alpha Site any minute.
It’s raining outside. The cold, fat rain that should hurt and drench more, but doesn’t seem to do anything but slide through hair and make the ground soft. It trickles down the gutter to her right, tinkling quietly. A small, muddy puddle forms which she stares at, counting the rings around each droplet that lands inside.
One, two, three.
She doesn’t remember the last time she stood and watched the rain, listened to it rustle through the leaves, smelt the freshness of the world. Not much time over the last few years. So much work.
It rains on Atlantis, of course. But it’s distant, beyond the windows, always when she’s working. The city is so self-contained at times, that though she’s surrounded by water, the weather hardly ever reaches her inside.
A brief flash of ozone and she’s back on the balcony, fingers numb and cold, trying to pull Kolya and Rodney back over, back inside, back away from the waves and the storm. A breath, a raindrop, and it’s gone. Just her, the doorway, the puddle and the Daedalus on the edge of her vision.
That isn’t how she wants to remember the rain.
A polite voice by her shoulder, at a respectful distance, and duty calls. She nods, acknowledging the summons, and takes one last look at the puddle by the doorway.
When she returns to Atlantis, she’s going to stand on the balcony in the rain, she thinks, and wait for the sun.
Summary: Elizabeth. Rain. For elvinborn. Spoiler for 'Intruder'
